Fate of trace elements in Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC) of municipal solid waste

Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion is a novel fluidized bed concept for burning waste. This study analyzed solid samples from an industrial OCAC application using municipal waste and the oxygen carrier ilmenite. The presence of carriers impacts ash chemistry, which can influence corrosion characteristics. By investigating obtained applications, unique highly relevant information on solid-state chemistry fate important elements be obtained. In total, 20 bottom ashes 17 fly were sampled over period 38 days. preceding study, surface interaction between ilmenite Zn, Cu Pb was investigated. this paper, distribution these throughout particle cross-section residence time has been studied XRD, SEM-EDX XPS. results show that Zn incorporated in Fe-rich layer form ferrites, while accumulates inside particles with time, Cr enriched magnetically separated ash. Low concentrations detected ashes, suggesting significant part released gas phase. temperature, material reduction potential evaluated multicomponent, multiphase equilibrium calculations. It shown less prone to melts comparison silica sand addition sulfur could decrease volatilization Pb.
